U.S. Department of Homeland Security, a “refugee is defined as a person outside of his or her country of nationality who is unable or unwilling to return because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.”
Despite the overwhelming number of people who fall under this definition, there are still many more who must flee their homes for other reasons. A new category of “refugees” is emerging has nothing to do with persecution by other people. Instead people may be unable to return to their homes because of climate change.
