Daily Reflections for June 29-July 5

Weekly Lectionary Texts

2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10
Psalm 48
2 Corinthians 12:2-10
Mark 6:1-13

Monday, June 29. In 2 Samuel we read of the beginning of David’s reign as king. It was a time of great excitement and anticipation in Israel. Remember a time when you began a new responsibility. What dreams did you have for that time? What did you expect of yourself? How did your dreams sustain you during that time?

Tuesday, June 30. Read “Power and Terror and Beauty” (page 20) about the importance and power of dreams. What is your dream for today - for yourself? For your family? For your community? For the world?

Wednesday, July 1. In the lectionary reading, the psalmist declares the faithfulness of God’s guidance. Where do you see God’s guiding hand in your life? Today find a way to share your experience of God’s guidance with someone younger than you. Pass on the story of God’s steadfast love to the next generation.

Thursday, July 2. Read Mark 6:1-13. Jesus came into his hometown of Nazareth and the people doubted his authority to teach because he had been a boy among them. Jesus sent out the disciples and told them to knock the dust from their feet and move on if they were not welcomed. Think about the people you meet during your everyday life and the ways in which you welcome them. Imagine new ways of offering them acceptance and affirmation.

Friday, July 3. As you prepare to celebrate our country’s independence, plan to watch the HBO presentation of “John Adams” over the next few days. As you watch the story unfold, give thanks for the courage of our founders. Notice the roles of everyday citizens and ask what you can do today as a citizen to work for the common good.

Saturday, July 4. Independence Day. Imagine the courage of our forefathers and mothers as they spoke out and acted out against the status quo and invented something brand new. Pray for our current leaders: president, senators, mayors, governors, and police officers who serve to protect our liberties. Pray for those who raise questions about the status and keep us growing.

Sunday, July 5. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Read 2 Corinthians 12:2-10. When the members of the church at Corinth were arguing about who had the “best” gifts, Paul wrote to remind them that all God’s gifts to the church were equally important. Think about your gifts today. Imagine new ways to use them for Christ’s church.

Prayer
God of dreams and promises, open the eyes of my imagination to all that is possible. Amen.
