About Us

This new devotional approach is especially created to invite you to personal reflection and concrete action. Alive Now is for the person who is struggling to be alive to the God who is living and active; for the person who wants to grow; for those who want to work out their faith in the contemporary scene. — The Editors, Alive Now Test Issue, 1971

These words from the very first issue of Alive Now in 1971 nicely sum up the purpose of Alive Now. The Upper Room’s first foray into contemporary design, message, and spiritual formation was filled with music lyrics, edgy graphics and photos, and leading-edge theology. We’re proud of this publication and the places it has led us – from reclaiming the singing of psalms to the creation of excellent liturgical resources. From reframing the classical themes of Christian practice to addressing current issues facing the church (AIDS, addiction, interfaith hospitality, poverty).

In today’s changing publishing landscape, the spiritually-enriching content readers have come to treasure in Alive Now will become “alive” in a new way, a new technology, as The Upper Room moves toward expanded digital publishing for individuals and churches.

Alive Now’s style and panache will be a part of this new thing. Our goal is to make rich and meaningful spiritual resources available in more ways to more of the people who hunger for a sacred way of living. Sign up on our home page for a newsletter that will let you know of future developments.

Alive Now’s editorial statement:

Alive Now is a thematic, bimonthly magazine that seeks to nourish people who are hungry for a sacred way of living. This four-color, 48-page publication of The Upper Room speaks to the opportunities and challenges of following Christ in the modern world. Scripture and prayer are two foundational cornerstones of content. We accept freelance theme-based writing that is submitted either by mail or electronically and strive to represent the widest possible diversity (theological, geographical, denominational, racial, cultural) among our writers.
