Meet Steve West, contributor in the November/December 2015 issue, “Mystery.” His article “Embracing Mystery in a Culture of Certainty” appears on page 6. To get a copy of this issue or to order a subscription to Alive Now, call 1.800.972.0433  or order online.

Alive Now: What inspired you to write the article in the current issue?
Steve West: One of the great surprises of Christian ministry is that I always seem to have more to learn than I have to teach. I was attending the Academy for Spiritual Formation when I wrote the personal mission statement I refer to in the article, hoping to bring my newfound sense of mystery to a community full of exacting personalities. How little I knew. They had the creative tension already moving around in their bones. The experience of immersing myself in this new community opened my eyes, as I began to search for mystery in places where it is already under the surface.

AN: How did you meet Alive Now? What does it mean to you?
SW: I can recall the first copy I ever saw of Alive Now, when I was about fourteen years old. My mother gave me one, in hopes that it might help me along as a teenager. I suppose it did, but the next time I picked up a copy was when I was going through a spiritual awakening at age thirty-eight. Mom planted a seed and when the time was right, I came back to it. It is my favorite devotional periodical to both read and write for, because it has both spiritual depth and a thematic “artsy flair.” There is something about it that connects with me.

Steve West is a husband, father, minister, musician, and writer who serves as senior pastor of First UMC in Arab, AL. His blog, “Musings of a Musical Preacher,” is found at
