I hate change. Or maybe it would be more accurate to say that I’m uncomfortable with change, with transitions. Perhaps it’s a personality thing – I’m a “J” (“Judging) on the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator®. That means that while I’m really good at taking care of details, I have hard time with doing new things. I like things to stay the same—from the way I do tasks, to, even sometimes, the location of the milk in the refrigerator.
But change is a part of life. In fact, there is no life without change. From the time that we are born, transitions begin to unfold. We grow in bodies, minds, and spirits. Beth and her dog, Jack We are faced every day with new experiences, people, and opportunities.
Some of these transitions are small — moving through the grades in school, growing closer to or apart from friends. Others are big—leaving home to make a new life, having a baby, changing jobs, experiencing illness in one’s life or that of a loved one, retiring from a long career. And then there’s that final transition in our earthly lives, death.
For this issue, we borrow a spiritual practice from the 12-Step Community — the practice of acceptance (p. 40). Whether we welcome or resist them, transitions are part of our lives. The practice of acceptance is one way to find peace in the midst of the challenges that come with difficult transitions.
No matter what changes you are facing, remember that God is there — doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:16), making a way in the wilderness. May you feel God’s presence,
comfort, and guidance in the midst of your transitions.
