Abide in Me

True Vine

Friday, May 4. The word “abide” is found in both John 15:1-8 and 1 John 4:7-21. As you read both passages, think about what a call to “abide” would be like.

What does it mean for you to “abide” in God’s love?

Words from The Word: Jesus said, “Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you.” -John 15:4, The Message

This Week…

Lectionary Texts:

Audio Lectio: Jesus says “I am the vine” – listen to and pray these words from John 15:5-7.

Pray for: the people and countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia.

Spiritual Tools: Hearing the call of God is only half the struggle — we must also learn to discern that call in our lives. Let’s get started with Discerning God’s Will by Nicole Corlew.

O God, who calls those who will follow along with you, show us our duty today, and give us bread for our journey. Through Jesus Christ. Amen.

The NIV I use doesn’t have the word “abide”. It uses “remain”. I may be just an old Christian, but I really, REALLY like the word “abide”. That word encompasses “remain” yet means much more than just that to me. For me, to abide with you means we, you and I, keep an intimate and loving close at-one-ment, one with the other. For me, remain does not have an immediate intimacy.

Before I read this I heard a song on Christian radio that said “who have I shown Jesus to today.” It so speaks to me to be “in Jesus and Jesus in me.” I try to be Jesus hands and feet but some days are harder than other. Striving to abide in him and him in me today.
